Massachusetts – 6th staff in the north of the Atlantic coast USA since 1788. The staff area – 10,6 thousand sq. miles, the population – about 6,4 million persons. An administrative centre, the largest city, the economic and cultural centre — Boston.
The word "Massachusetts" has an American Indian origin and means "District at the big hill”. In spite of the fact that Massachusetts occupies only 45 place on size among all states, it applies for being considered as the leader and the intellectual centre of the nation. And for this purpose it has all bases.
The first printing editions, newspapers, libraries and high schools have appeared in Massachusetts. The oldest university of America - Harward has been based in Cambridge in 1636. The first comprehensive school has been based a little later in 1647. We will notice, that the American Revolution has begun in Boston.
And today uncountable set of intellectuals offer and apply here the abilities in the field of high technologies and programming. Numerous colleges and universities have involved students from all world, and staff became a cosmopolitan. Remarkable, ancient Boston to the American measures (it is based in 1630), nowadays large seaport and transport knot. But except the academic abundance, Massachusetts fascinates hills of Berkshire in the west and not striking beauty of coast in the east. Seaports and the whaling centres of the recent past involve numerous tourists and having a rest on the summer beaches.
