2030 m laying at height above sea level the foggy city of Chichikastenango is surrounded by picturesque valleys and framed by gear ridges of mountain ridges. Чичикастенанго it is known still with доиспанских times as the largest shopping centre of empire майя.
Isolated enough city on Thursdays and Sundays turns to the present chaos when Чичикастенанго becomes the important market centre, the greatest and most high-mountainous market in Central America. Religious brotherhoods "кофрадиас" suit these days colourful processions round church Santo-Tomas and sanctuary Paskual-Aba (ancient капище майя, devoted to the god of the earth).
And in Dias-de-Los-Muertos ("day dead") all townsmen gather for a cemetery to remember the ancestors. According to local ethnographers, anywhere more in the country not to find so well remained ceremonies майя, as in Чичикастенанго. And it it is no wonder - in church Santo-Tomas is stored a copy of ancient book Popol-Vuh ("the Sacred book of creation" or "the council Book", in a more comprehensive sense - "the people Book"), containing all system American Indian космографии and histories. The city Regional museum contains an extensive collection of archaeological subjects.
In mountain areas of the Alto-verapasa numerous American Indian 
villages and caves in valley Ланкин, protecting area of ancient rain wood reserve Chelema (here one of the greatest in the country of populations of a bird кетцаль), turquoise reservoirs of calcareous ridge Semuk-Champi near to Ланкина, cave Grutas-de-Lankin (60 km to the east Кобана) with a huge colony of bats, reserve Biotopo-de-Kettsal (11,5 sq. are interesting famous for landscapes and coffee Кобан (region capital), crystal-clear lake Balneario-Cham-Che and chapel Чишим over the city of Verapas, Km) at village Purulja, "the native land тарзанки" - the city of Kubulko (ritual of jumps from rocks with an elastic plait standing here years 800), numerous ruins майя around Рабиналь indeed practise, ruins Утатлан (Кумаркаах, 4 km to the west Santa-Kruz-del-Kiche), well-known "triangle Ишиль" where Indians speak in the mysterious language with the same name, and also isolated valley Салама in which Indians from group "покомчи" live.
