Dushanbe – capital of sovereign Tajikistan. It is located in a picturesque and fertile Gissarsky valley, at height of 750-930 m. Within a city archaeological monuments of Greek-baktrijskogo time (II century BC) and traces of medieval settlements (VI-VIII centuries) are revealed not few. The first written sources mentioning Dushanbe, concern the beginning of XVII century.
Actually of Dushanbe was formed in 1924 as a result of merge of three settlements: Сариосие, Шохмансур and Dushanbe, with the population of 5,6 thousand persons. For more than half a century it has turned to a blossoming city with the population over 1 million persons. The city is located in a seismic zone and at building of buildings (9-12 floor) antiseismic, ferro-concrete fastenings are widely applied.
Dushanbe the largest industrial centre of republic. It lets out more than 1/3 industrial outputs of Tajikistan. It is a mechanical engineering and metal working city ("Таджиктекстильмаш", "Таджикгидроагрегат", "Таджиккабель", factory of refrigerators, арматурный factory, etc.), the industries of building materials (cement, house-building, деревообделочный, ЖВК), the easy and food industry (textile, silk, масложировой, dairy combines; sewing, knitted, shoe, tobacco factories; tanning, wine, grain factories etc.).
Dushanbe – the important scientific and cultural centre. Here there is an Academy of sciences of republic with 26 scientific research institutes which work in all directions of a modern science.

In capital 5 theatres (an opera and ballet, the academic drama theatre, Russian drama, youth theatre), a philharmonic society, circus, more than 70 cinemas and film projectors, a film studio "Таджикфильм" work. Here there is a State library of Фирдоуси, more than 180 public libraries, 5 museums, radio and a television centre, tens preschool centres etc.
Dushanbe – the green city created by hands of the person in a foothill belt. The city changes the shape, there is all краше. There are new microdistricts, new green space of rest is created, new streets are laid.
Dushanbe is a member of the International federation of twin towns. It has become related with cities the Monastery in Tunis, the Dignity in ИАР, Lusaka in Zambia, Lahore in Pakistan, Klagenfurt to Austria, Боулдер in the USA, etc.
